In a scene straight out of a comedy caper, a mischievous troop of over 200 monkeys staged a daring escape from the Pho Khao Ton Monkey Nursery in Lop Buri’s Mueang district, causing quite the kerfuffle with an unexpected visit to the nearby Tha Hin Police Station.

Yesterday, Sunday, November 17, around 300 cheeky primates originally corralled from Lop Buri City decided they’d had enough of life behind bars and burst out of their enclosure. The furry fiends seized the opportunity to explore their newfound freedom, scampering along streets, clambering over rooftops, and making quite the impression on the bewildered bobbies next door.

Upon sleuthing the scene, police discovered the raucous rabble had managed to bust open their confinement by collectively rocking the cage back and forth until the structure gave up the ghost.

Swift action from the municipality saw the monkey haven repaired in record time, with around 40 of the fleet-footed escapees tempted back with tasty treats.

To round up the rest of these elusive escape artists, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) has enlisted a team of urban ‘monkey wranglers’ to track them down, a resident told Bangkok Post.

“The monkey nursery was not equipped to handle such a determined breakout.”

Local government officials are now doubling down on their efforts to monkey-proof the sanctuary to avoid any repeat performances. This escapade not only highlights the need for sturdier cages but also throws a spotlight on the precarious management of wildlife in urban settings, said a DNP official.

“We’re doing our best to ensure all the monkeys are safely returned.”

As the hunt continues, this tale of monkey business serves as a cheeky reminder of the unpredictability of wildlife and the crucial role secure enclosures play in their care. Meanwhile, Lop Buri is abuzz with talk of the delicate dance between residents and their primate neighbours.
