Gunmen at large after fatal shooting of Thai businessman in Kanchanaburi
Police probe love affair or business feud as motive behind murder
Two suspects remain at large following the fatal shooting of a Thai businessman in the car park of a construction materials store in the central province of Kanchanaburi.
The 51 year old victim, Sittikorn, also known as Sia Piak, was gunned down outside the store in the Pak Phraek sub-district of Mueang district on Wednesday, June 25. Sittikorn and his wife, Amphai, were about to enter their black pickup when the suspects opened fire.
Amphai escaped uninjured and is currently being questioned by officers from Mueang Kanchanaburi Police Station to determine the motive behind the shocking crime.
According to Amphai, the couple went to the store to purchase chairs and decorations for their restaurant. She told police that one of the gunmen called out her husband’s name before opening fire.
Sittikorn’s son, Anuchon, told MGR Online that he had spoken to his father by phone at 6pm on the day of the murder, unaware it would be their final conversation. His father had asked him to wait at home to help unload the new chairs for the family’s restaurant.
CCTV footage of the murder, which was widely shared by Thai media outlets, showed the moment Sittikorn opened the driver’s side door. Two suspects emerged from the vehicle parked next to his. The first gunman shot Sittikorn in the head, while the second fired several rounds at him before fleeing in their car.
Sittikorn reportedly sustained 15 gunshot wounds to his body. Police identified the weapons used in the attack as .38 calibre pistols.
Police stated that the motive could be linked to either adultery or business disputes, as the victim was known to be involved in multiple local enterprises. Officers continue to question the victim’s wife and are reviewing additional CCTV footage from nearby areas to help identify the suspects.
In a related case, police arrested a Burmese national for the fatal shooting of a Thai gym owner in Bangkok’s Bang Khae district in March.
The suspect reportedly went to the victim’s home to meet his wife, who worked as a carer for the victim’s elderly mother. The victim refused to let the man into his house, as he had previously threatened to kill his wife.
A confrontation ensued after the victim threatened the suspect with a gun. The two struggled for control of the weapon, which resulted in the victim being fatally shot.
The Burmese suspect fled the scene in the victim’s car, taking the firearm with him, but was later arrested in Soi On Nut 65, Bangkok.
