Bangkok Iron Factory, a leading metal manufacturing company, confirmed plans to compensate 382 employees following their employment termination on December 28. The company is also offering the option for skilled workers to continue employment at two of its other factories.

The employee compensation decision follows a meeting held today between the Labour Ministry’s inspector, Sophakiat Kiatniracha, and the employees of the factory, also known as BISW.

The company, in compliance with the law, issued a termination notice on November 22, effective from December 28, thereby providing the employees with a month’s notice. The employer has pledged to compensate severance pay and benefits in accordance with the law.

Sophakiat noted that many of the terminated employees were interested in continuing their employment. In response to this, the ministry is planning another review to assess the needs of the workers, such as job placements, skill training, and possible employment opportunities in two other companies under the same employer. However, the selection process will be based on the skills and job compatibility of the employees.

Sophakiat further disclosed that from now until December 28, the Welfare Department will monitor whether the company transfers the compensation to the employees in full. The compensation amount varies for each individual based on their length of service.

When asked about the likelihood of the Labour Ministry intervening in cases other than high-profile businesses, Sophakiat clarified that the size of the business or the number of insured people is not a criterion for worker care. The Labour Ministry is prepared to ensure the protection of every employee, even in establishments with only one insured person, reported KhaoSod.

The families of the eight Thai workers who lost their lives in the Hamas attack in Israel on October 7 will receive an initial compensation of 40,000 baht for funeral expenses. The ministry will also collaborate with Israeli authorities to secure additional death benefits for the affected families. Read more HERE.
