Thai rescuer hospitalised after 4-metre python wraps around neck

A Thai rescuer attempted to remove a 4-metre long python from a house in Bangkok but blundered, allowing the snake to wrap around his neck until he lost consciousness.

A local homeowner, Oh, called the Por Teck Tung Foundation rescuers to her home at 10.12pm yesterday, April 1, to help a rescuer who had lost consciousness inside her house in Soi Bang Waek 75 in the Phasi Charoen district of Bangkok.

Upon arrival at the two-storey wooden house, the rescuers found the victim, 68 year old Jarun Marbkhuntod, lying unconscious. They performed CPR before rushing him to Siriraj Hospital. The python that attacked him was already secured in a sack.

Oh told the rescue team that she had contacted them via a hotline, seeking help in capturing two pythons hiding in her home. She explained that she had seven cats, one was killed by the snakes, and four others had gone missing.

Oh attempted to locate the snakes’ hiding place and managed to find one but the other python slithered away from her home.

After successfully locating the missing python, Oh contacted the rescue team again, and Jarun arrived alone. He managed to catch the snake, using one hand to control its head and the other to hold its tail.

Unexpectedly, Jarun removed his hand from the snake’s tail, allowing it to wrap around his neck, tightening its grip. Oh said she attempted to help Jarun remove the python but was unsuccessful, and he lost consciousness.

The snake then tried to escape, so Oh grabbed its tail and called for help from her neighbours. She eventually secured the python in a bag before seeking assistance for Jarun.

The snake was handed over to the local fire brigade for further action, though the report did not specify what happened next.

There has been no updates on Jarun’s condition from the rescue team or the hospital since the incident.

Last year, a member of the Asoraphit Wittaya Rescue Team, Jakrin Nilkamhaeng, also known as Aun Asoraphit Wittaya, was bitten by a king cobra and remained in a coma for more than seven months.

Aun eventually regained consciousness and was discharged from the hospital in September last year, but he still requires close care, leading his mother to quit her job to look after him.
