Dead baby on street: Thai woman claims she mistook labour for urge to urinate

A Thai woman, who gave birth and left her newborn to die on a street in Bangkok during the Songkran festival, claimed she took drugs and mistook the signs of labour for the need to urinate.

The 27 year old woman, Piyathida, shocked the public when her newborn daughter’s body was discovered on a street outside a village in Bangkok’s Don Mueang district on Wednesday, April 16. She later confessed to having delivered the baby at the scene and leaving the child to die.

Several news outlets reported that, following the birth, Piyathida returned to celebrate the water-splashing festivities with friends, despite being visibly bloodied. She initially told her friends that she was menstruating.

After the incident went viral on social media, Piyathida took to Facebook to apologise to the public. She began her post by stating…

“I would like to apologise to everyone who was affected and troubled because of me. I didn’t intend to abandon my baby. I had only just found out that I was pregnant when I was already six months along.”

Piyathida said she was too afraid to tell her mother about the pregnancy because she was unemployed and unable to care for a child. The baby’s father reportedly abandoned her upon learning she was pregnant.

She claimed she took drugs while celebrating with friends and later experienced stomach pain. She said she did not realise the symptoms were related to labour, believing instead that she simply needed to urinate.

She went to relieve herself near a parked car, but instead of urinating, she unexpectedly gave birth.

“I didn’t know what to do afterwards and didn’t dare tell any of my friends what had happened. I swear I didn’t return to enjoy the water-splashing as the news claimed. I feel remorseful for what I’ve done and accept the consequences of my actions, but please give me a chance to improve.”

However, netizens expressed doubt over her claim that she was unaware of her pregnancy and the signs of labour, noting that friends had previously told the media she already had two children with two ex-husbands.

Don Mueang Police Station officers told Channel 7 that Piyathida remains in a hospital due to significant blood loss. Officers will question her at the hospital and await the results of the baby’s autopsy before deciding on charges.
