Jack Karlson, the unforgettable face of the “succulent Chinese meal” meme, has died at the age of 82. The Karlson family confirmed the sad news, saying they are grieving “with heavy hearts” as Jack passed away yesterday, August 7, surrounded by his loved ones.

Jack became a viral sensation back in October 1991 after his arrest outside the China Sea Restaurant in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley. The arrest, for credit card fraud, was a turning point in his life and sparked one of the most iconic Internet moments.

As he was led away by police, Jack’s spirited remarks captured the public’s imagination: “Gentlemen, this is democracy manifest,” and “What is the charge? Eating a meal? A succulent Chinese meal?”

These statements became a cornerstone of Internet meme culture, with millions of views and a lasting impact on popular humour. His larger-than-life personality and unforgettable quotes turned him into a beloved figure across social media.

The meme’s legacy continues to live on, and Jack’s story has been the subject of a forthcoming documentary titled The Man Who Ate a Succulent Chinese Meal. This film explores his colourful, and at times controversial, life.

Jack’s family has chosen a fitting tribute to his memory, planning to celebrate his life with a beer and a succulent Chinese meal, just as he would have wanted.

Larger than life

Earlier this year, Jack reunited with Stoll Watt, one of the police officers involved in his famous arrest, at the very restaurant where it all began. The reunion, held to announce the documentary, highlighted the unusual but heartfelt bond formed between the two men. Stoll described Jack as “larger than life with a big heart,” reflecting on their surprising friendship.

Despite a tumultuous life, including multiple escapes from jail and years spent in institutions, Jack always maintained a positive outlook.

“I’ve done the best I could to get free, I wanted to be free.”

Heath Davis, the director of the upcoming documentary, shared his heartbreak over Jack’s death but remained committed to sharing his incredible story.

“Jack lived a life unlike any other. His ability to always see the bright side of life, despite enormous adversity, is something I’ll carry forward with me.”

Karlson may have left this world, but his meme and his remarkable story will continue to captivate and entertain.
