Phuket poll: Vegetarian Festival 2010

PHUKET: Phuket is busy making final preparations for the annual Vegetarian Festival, which officially gets underway with the arrival of the new moon on Friday.

A great number of Phuket Town residents dress in white and observe 10 days of physical and spiritual purification by abstaining from meat, alcohol and other things viewed as contaminants by devotees.

Those who choose not to take part, however, sometimes complain about the loud noise of firecrackers, traffic congestion and the sight of mah song spirit mediums engaged in self-mutilation walking through their communities.

So in the latest Gazette “snap” poll, we ask readers whether or not they are looking forward to Veggie Fest 2010. To have your say click here or on the icon at the top-right corner of this page. Those wishing to elaborate on their views can do so by posting a comment in the Readers’ Forum below.

Every year people from around the world travel to Phuket to photograph the spectacle. Those wishing to brush up their photography skills in the run-up to the big event can take part in a special two-day photography workshop given by award-winning photographer Ryan Libre.
