PHUKET: Laguna Phuket Triathlon has been awarded this year’s ‘Best Amateur Sports Event’ at the 2016 Sports Industry Awards & Conference (SPIA Asia).

The Laguna Phuket Triathlon organizers picked up the bronze award at SPIA conference in Bangkok on October 4. Winners in the same category were the Bangkok Marathon, awarded Gold, and the Top of the Gulf Regatta (Silver).

SPIA Asia 2016 saw an expansion of both the sports conference and Awards Gala formats to now include 17 Asian countries across 19 distinct categories, both professional and community focused.

A total of 208 entries were received this year with 161 entries making it to the shortlist. An independent panel of industry experts and appointed awards auditors reviewed the shortlisted entries before awarding the top performers with gold, silver and bronze accolades.

“We’d like to thank Sport 360 and MMC Sportz Marketing for hosting such prestigious event to recognize us in the sports industry,” said Laguna Phuket’s Managing Director Ravi Chandran.

“We’d also like to thank the Ministry of Tourism and Sports Thailand, Sport Authority of Thailand and the Tourism Authority of Thailand for continuous support in the country’s sport tourism segment – also the Phuket Provincial Office and Thai Airways International (PLC) for being there for Laguna Phuket Triathlon from the beginning, as well as all of our sponsors,” said Mr Ravi.

“Special thanks to Go Adventure Asia, our long-term partners, all of our triathletes from our first race in 1994, event staff and volunteers both from Asia’s premier resort Laguna Phuket and local communities surrounding us.”

Registration for this year’s Laguna Phuket Triathlon on Sunday November 20 is open now until November 13. For more details, visit www.lagunaphukettri.com.
