Officials warn of upcoming storms in several regions of Thailand

Officials are warning of thunderstorms, gusty winds, and even hail in Thailand’s north, northeastern, central, and eastern regions. This includes the Bangkok area. Last night parts of the city were presented with an impressive thunder and light show to welcome in the start of the annual wet season.

The Thai Meteorological Department says that from May 1-2, a moderate high-pressure system from China will extend to the north and the northeast, resulting in hot to very hot weather in the upper country. The north of Thailand has been HOT for the past month with a few local records broken.

The TMD is warning people living in these regions to stay away from big trees and unsecured billboards during periods of wind or storms. It says farmers should do what they can to prevent their crops from being damaged, and keep updated on the weather through the TMD website or TMD local online radars. The department added that all transports should take more caution during any summer storms.

The regions where storms are expected include Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Chon Buri province.

High-pressure systems from China seems to be bringing all sorts of weird weather patterns to Thailand lately. Earlier this month, a high-pressure system from China caused a spooky cold spell in Thailand. The high-pressure system covered most of Northern Thailand, where temperatures were 18-23 degrees Celsius, meaning they had dropped by two to four degrees. In Bangkok, the temperature fell to 21 degrees Celsius.

Weather reporters said this is unusually cold, especially in the middle of Thailand’s infamous hot season. In the past, unusual cold spells in Thailand have disrupted the country’s ecosystems. In 2021, a coldspell killed 10 tonnes of fish on a fishing farm in the northeastern province of Nakhon Phanom.

Phuket’s southern island has already had a week of rain storms to welcome the south west monsoon for the wet season. Find out more about Thailand’s annual monsoons HERE.
