Good Samaritans successfully intervened in a suicide attempt by a Thai transwoman on the Bhumibol 1 Bridge in Samut Prakan province near Bangkok. She claimed her decision was motivated by the discovery of her boyfriend’s affair with her sister.

Motorists and pedestrians travelling on the bridge noticed the suspicious behaviour of the 30 year old transwoman, Thanakorn, and reported the matter to officers at Phra Pradaeng Police Station.

Thanakorn was drunk and cried continuously. She sat on the edge of the bridge outside the railing barrier, causing witnesses to fear that she would jump into the Chao Phraya River below.

Thanakorn revealed to the crowd that she had just caught her boyfriend having an affair with her biological sister. She tried to convince herself to accept the truth but could not do so.

A taxi driver who took her to the bridge told police that Thanakorn got into his car at Soi Nana in Bangkok and asked him to drive her there. She lied to him, claiming that she arranged to meet a friend on the bridge.

Upon arrival, Thanakorn paid the fare and immediately ran towards the edge of the bridge. Realising the situation, the taxi driver followed her and attempted to convince her to return to the car but she refused.

He and others tried to dissuade her from her tragic attempt before calling the police.

Police officers and Good Samaritans spent over an hour trying to persuade Thanakorn to abandon her suicide attempt but without success.

Fortunately, a 36 year old Thai man, Thanarit Noppawiroj, seized an opportunity when Thanakorn was distracted and grabbed her arm before others rushed in to pull her away from the bridge railing.

Thanakorn was taken to Phra Pradaeng Police Station to rest, and police later contacted her family members to collect her.

Another successful suicide intervention was reported on Sunday, February 23, at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok. In this case, a Thai woman managed to save a British man from attempting suicide by jumping off a bridge near a passenger terminal.
