Thai mother and 2 children killed by drunk driver in Tak

A drunk hatchback driver crashed into a motorcycle carrying a Thai mother and her two children, killing all three of them, on a road in the northern province of Tak.

A group of people rushed to assist the woman and her young children after witnessing the grey Honda Jazz hatchback collide with their motorcycle, a blue and white Honda Scoopy, outside a petrol station on Mae Sot–Umphang Road at around 11.30am yesterday, April 29.

The hatchback, which had a shattered windscreen, came to rest on the traffic barrier in the middle of the road, while the motorcycle was found overturned about 60 metres away on the traffic island.

The driver of the hatchback, 63 year old Prayong Panjak, remained at the scene and was found to be under the influence of alcohol. Police told ThaiRath that Prayong had 96 milligrammes percent of alcohol in his system.

Officers from Mae Sot Police Station and rescuers were called to the scene. Two victims from the motorcycle, 34 year old Orraphan Pantheon and her eight year old son Songkran, were pronounced dead at the scene. Another boy, four year old Jakkrit, was rushed to a hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Orraphan’s husband, 32 year old Porradon, arrived at the scene in his food delivery uniform. He reportedly broke down in tears and nearly lost consciousness upon witnessing the devastating loss of his family. Rescuers had to escort him away from the scene to rest.

Witnesses told police that Orraphan had left her home on the opposite side of the road and was waiting to make a U-turn from the right lane when Prayong, allegedly speeding, crashed into her motorcycle.

Prayong is expected to face imprisonment of one to five years and a fine ranging from 20,000 to 100,000 baht for reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in death. His driving licence will be suspended for at least one year or possibly revoked.

A similarly tragic incident occurred in November last year, when a Thai mother and her two children were killed in a car crash in the southern province of Chumphon.

In that case, a woman with alcohol in her system crashed her friend’s BMW into the victims’ motorcycle. The BMW driver allegedly fled the scene with her pet cat without checking on the victims, sparking widespread outrage online. She also failed to appear in court on several occasions.
