Thai man commits suicide after alleged betrayal by ex-boyfriend

A gay man committed suicide in a car parked outside a farm and café he had reportedly invested in with his former boyfriend, following alleged betrayal by the ex, his family, and his new partner.

The owner of Subprayun Farm and Cafe in the central province of Lop Buri, Yo, contacted officers from Phattana Nikhom Police Station to investigate the death of his ex-boyfriend, 44 year old Pongsathon “Kwan” Saengchaipaisarn, on Sunday, May 4.

Yo told police that he found Kwan unconscious in his bronze Toyota Corolla Altis sedan and subsequently checked the security footage. He saw Kwan park the car at the scene at around 2am and light a fire inside the vehicle.

Police concluded that Kwan died by suicide from carbon monoxide poisoning after discovering a charcoal stove in the car.

Before the tragedy, Kwan posted multiple messages on the Facebook page of his mushroom farm, Subnarathon Farm, detailing the conflict between himself and Yo. He published 11 posts explaining the situation and left a farewell message to his family and friends in the final one.

According to Kwan, he had invested over 22 million baht into the cafe, farm, noodle stall, and houses located on land owned by Yo. During their relationship, they not only ran the business together but also supported each other’s families.

In addition to his role on the farm, Kwan earned income from his career in the legal and accounting sectors, much of which he claimed to have reinvested into the business.

However, when his earnings from legal and accounting work declined, he was no longer able to contribute to the business financially as before. As tensions escalated, Yo broke up with him.

Kwan stated that although he and Yo no longer loved each other, they agreed to continue working together as a business partner.

Unfortunately, Yo and his family reportedly pressured Kwan to leave the property. He eventually complied, burdened by substantial debt stemming from both business investments and personal expenses.

Kwan also alleged that Yo brought a new boyfriend into their shared accommodation. The new partner acted as if he were a business co-founder, claiming involvement in developing the farm and cafe.

Yo later publicly disputed Kwan’s claims, stating that he established the entire business himself using a 9 million baht bank loan. He also accused Kwan of repeated infidelity, citing explicit conversations with others in the LGBTQIA+ community.

Kwan, however, denied the affair accusations and maintained that the total value of the farm, cafe, and accommodation exceeded 15 million baht, making it impossible to have been built with only a 9 million baht investment.

In his final Facebook post, Kwan expressed that he had forgiven Yo, his family, and everyone else involved before committing suicide.

Kwan’s family declined to speak with the media, stating they wish the matter to be concluded. Meanwhile, Yo entered monkhood following Kwan’s death and refused to provide further comment to news agencies.

Thai netizens expressed their condolences to Kwan’s family and urged couples running businesses together to legally register their marriage to avoid similar complications in the future. Some sided with Kwan and issued a ban against Yo’s farm and cafe.
