An unprecedented storm struck Nong Khai province last night, causing significant damage to homes and infrastructure, including a widespread power outage due to fallen electricity poles. A lifelong local, 55 year old Boorachai expressed he had never witnessed such severe weather in his lifetime.

As the storm raged through the region, residents of the Ban Fang district of Sakhrai scrambled to secure their belongings but many were unsuccessful. The violent winds tore away zinc roofs from several houses, leaving the community in distress.

The next day, reporters surveyed the damage, revealing the extensive impact on the area, including homes, crops, and livestock, though the full extent to which the latter were affected remains to be assessed.

The storm did not spare religious structures either. The Wat Pho Sri Somphorn temple experienced significant damage as well. The monks there were left in a precarious situation when the strong winds ripped zinc roofs off their living quarters.

Furthermore, the temple’s main pavilion, which housed a large Buddha statue, could not withstand the storm’s force, resulting in the collapse of the pavilion’s pillars onto the statue. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among the monks or the public.

The devastation extended beyond Ban Taw Ka, with the nearby villages of Ban Deur and Ban Thung Sawan in Sakhrai district suffering similar fates. Numerous homes in these areas also sustained damage.

In response to the crisis, local authorities and village leaders promptly began to assess the situation to report to the provincial government and seek aid for the affected residents.

Electricity authorities worked diligently to restore power, with expectations to have service returned by the end of today, reported Khaosod.
