Fatal nap! Driver falls asleep, kills passenger in highway horror

A devastating accident on Highway 11 in Nakhon Sawan province tragically claimed the life of a young passenger this morning after a driver fell asleep at behind the wheel.
At around 2.40am, today, March 7, a Toyota pickup truck slammed into the back of a parked 18-wheeler, resulting in calamitous damage and heartbreak.
The scene at kilometre markers 13 and 14 in the Phrom Nimitr subdistrict was quickly attended to by officers from Takli Police Station and the Ruamkatanyu Foundation’s rescue team. They encountered an utterly wrecked pickup, stuffed with tools, and three unfortunate occupants.
The driver, a snooker table installer, suffered head injuries but could still recount the harrowing tale. His nephew, however, wasn’t as lucky. The young passenger was tragically pronounced dead at the scene, his life cut short by a broken neck.
Next to the driver sat a woman, painfully wedged against the car’s console with serious leg and forehead injuries. Skilled emergency personnel employed hydraulic cutters to free her from the mangled wreck before rushing her to the hospital, reported KhaoSod.
Phaisit Kabthong, known locally as “Kamnan Wee” and the head of the Phrom Nimitr subdistrict, provided further details.
“The driver confessed he was en route home to Sing Buri province from a job in Tak Fa district, when fatigue got the better of him. Without warning, he nodded off, only to awaken amidst the chaos of the crash.”

Meanwhile, the 18-wheeler, with only minor damage, had been safely parked on the roadside. Its driver, enjoying a brief rest while transporting ore from Uttaradit to Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, was jolted awake by the thunderous collision.
This tragic incident stands as a poignant reminder of the perils of driver fatigue, urging all motorists to prioritise safety and rest to prevent further heart-rending tales.

A similar tragic tale occurred in Pattaya on Monday. A heavily pregnant Lao woman died while her husband and two young daughters suffered serious injuries after the driver of a six-wheel truck fell asleep at the wheel and collided with their motorcycle on a road in Pattaya.
