Pregnant Lao woman killed, 3 injured in tragic Pattaya crash

A pregnant Lao woman tragically lost her life yesterday, while her husband and two young daughters suffered serious injuries after a six-wheel truck collided with their motorcycle on a road in Pattaya.
A crowd of locals gathered at the tragic and horrifying accident scene on Highway 331 (Chachoengsao-Sattahip) in the Bang Lamung district of Pattaya at around 4pm, yesterday, March 3.
The Sawang Borriboon Dhammastan Rescue Foundation was called to the scene to attend to the three injured victims and dead woman.
The husband, 31 year old Warathip, suffered a severe head wound, exposing his skull. His two daughters, aged four and two, had wounds and bruises across their bodies, with the older girl also sustaining a broken right arm. The three were rushed to Pattamakhun Hospital.
The body of Warathip’s 30 year old pregnant wife, Mon, was in a horrific condition. Her abdomen was torn open, and the lifeless body of her unborn baby was found a metre away from her.
The wrecked red motorcycle was near her body, while the six-wheel truck was parked 200 metres away with slight damage to its side. The truck driver, 62 year old Sonthana, remained at the scene and appeared deeply shaken by the incident.

Sonthana told police that he was driving back to his company after delivering products in the city centre of Chon Buri province. He admitted to falling asleep at the wheel, which caused his truck to collide with the family’s motorcycle.
A local witness told police that the truck also ran over the pregnant woman, making the accident even more tragic.

Police escorted Sonthana to the station but details of any legal action against him have not been made public.
Based on legal precedents in similar road accidents, the truck driver may face charges under Section 291 of the Criminal Code for reckless behaviour leading to death. The penalty could include up to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to 200,000 baht.
