A patient’s journey in overcoming depression with the aid of a beloved character, Butterbear, has captured the nation’s attention.
Depression remains a growing concern, and treatment typically involves medication, psychotherapy, electroconvulsive therapy, or other doctor-recommended methods. Consulting a doctor is crucial if depression is suspected, as medication or therapy benefits most patients. However, alternative emotional healing methods can also be effective.
The Facebook page Brain Matters with Dr Surarat shared a patient’s story, with permission, of their recovery from depression through becoming a fan of Butterbear.
“I wasn’t initially a fan of Butterbear. I saw the bear dancing, and people screamed wherever they went. It made me wonder why people were so excited about someone inside a bear suit, who could be a strong man for all we know.”
Dr Surarat added that his patient was smiling and cheerful.
“He had been battling depression with antidepressants and migraine, which resulted in significant weight gain. I jokingly said he was becoming a bear like Butterbear.
“He laughed and replied, ‘Yes, doctor, because I’m a fan. I always cheer for the bear, it’s cute and heartwarming.’ This gave insight into their improved mental health due to being a fan.
“They can now reduce their medication, not because of my skills, but thanks to the bear. The patient even shared Butterbear’s schedule to follow.

“Regardless of who is inside the bear, if it brings happiness to others, it is valuable. I often feel tired or irritable, but when meeting patients, I always engage positively.
“They’ve already suffered. There’s no need to add to their stress. This story teaches us all not to be a toxic person but a happy one, encouraging others. Those feeling down should find something cute or meaningful, like a cactus, a yellow cat, or a neighbour’s child’s smile. Everything can heal the heart if we notice it.”
This inspiring story, shared with consent from the patient and Butterbear, comes from Dr Surarat’s clinic at Chiang Mai University. It sparked numerous comments about finding happiness in simple ways, reported KhaoSod.
