Airport initiative boosts culture and economy in northern Thailand
Phitsanulok and Nan airports have introduced an innovative Live Airport concept aimed at highlighting the cultural identities of these provinces while generating sustainable economic benefits for local communities. The initiative was inaugurated on November 1 and seeks to position airports as not only transit points but also as cultural gateways into the region.
Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri, accompanied by officials from the Department of Airports (DoA), visited Phitsanulok Airport to observe the activities associated with this initiative.
The project, launched at both Phitsanulok and Nan airports, is a collaborative effort involving the DoA, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), and local businesses. It aims to attract tourists and foster community involvement through cultural events and festivals held within the airport precincts.
Manaporn emphasised that the project is designed to allocate space for local businesses and artisans, enabling them to display their products to help boost local incomes. The initiative will also feature folk art performances and workshops focused on arts and crafts, creating a vibrant and engaging atmosphere for visitors.
DoA director-general Danai Raungsorn described the Phitsanulok Live Airport project as featuring a giant water lily-inspired interior motif, with ambient sound effects enhancing the visitor experience. Additionally, the airport will host a series of cultural activities spread throughout the year.
“The Live Airport project aligns with the government’s ‘Aew Nua Khon La Khrung’ (Travelling North at Half Price) scheme, which is designed to promote tourism across 17 northern provinces.”
In pursuit of these goals, the DoA has been tasked with collaborating with local airports, communities, and relevant sectors to facilitate the project’s expansion. This includes focusing on the enhancement of airport infrastructure to meet international standards. Part of the development strategy involves increasing the number of feeder buses to improve accessibility for travellers.
The Phitsanulok Land Transportation Office has already initiated feeder bus services linking the airport with central Phitsanulok and the second Phitsanulok Bus Terminal, ensuring seamless connectivity for passengers, reported Bangkok Post.
