Foreign motorcyclist seriously injured after race in Chiang Mai

A foreign motorcyclist sustained serious injuries after allegedly racing with his friend and crashing into a police booth in Chiang Mai in the early hours of yesterday, April 7.
CCTV footage of the accident, shared on Channel 8, showed the foreigner’s motorcycle overturning near the footpath at Sanpakoi Intersection in the Mueang district of Chiang Mai. Another motorcyclist, who was reported to be the injured man’s friend, rushed to check on him.
The foreign man, whose identity remains undisclosed, was seen lying face up near a plant pot on the footpath. His motorcycle helmet fell off during the crash.
Locals who heard the loud crash rushed to check on the foreigner. A 46 year old Thai woman named Sasiwimon contacted rescue workers and police officers to help the injured man.
Sasiwimon told Channel 8 that the incident occurred at around 5am yesterday. She heard the injured foreigner’s friend repeatedly calling his name, but the man did not regain consciousness. Blood was reportedly flowing from the injured man’s nose and mouth.

Sasiwimon said she learned from a Thai motorist who witnessed the incident that the two foreign motorcyclists had been riding at very high speed and appeared to be racing each other.
They were reportedly travelling from Chang Khlan Road, crossing Nawarat Bridge, and continuing along Charoen Mueang Road before crashing into a small police booth.
Traffic police usually sit in the booth to control the traffic lights at the intersection, but fortunately, no officers were on duty at the time of the accident.

The booth was destroyed, along with several plant pots at the scene. Channel 8 reported that a large amount of blood and motorcycle debris was still visible when their reporter visited the scene yesterday afternoon.
Sasiwimon accompanied the injured motorcyclist and his friend to a hospital to follow up on his condition. She later left the injured man in his friend’s care.

Sasiwimon added that she returned to the scene and found the injured man’s gold necklace, so she handed the valuable item to hospital staff.
Channel 8 further reported that the crash caused significant traffic congestion yesterday morning, as it had affected the traffic light control system. Relevant officials are currently repairing the police booth and traffic light system, and hope to restore them by 10am today, April 8.
