The Arts Brighton College Bangkok

Brighton College Bangkok is renowned for its outstanding theatre productions, which consistently impress audiences with their innovative and exciting performances. Every year, the school stages a number of different theatrical events, ranging from musicals and plays to classic works of literature. Brighton College Bangkok has a wonderful 650-seat theatre at the heart of the school and they have the perfect platform to showcase many of their student’s talents.

Grease (Film 1978) – Musical Performance

Brighton College Bangkok’s performance of Grease was a spectacular show that truly brought the audience back to the 1950s. The set was designed to look like a 50’s diner, and the cast was dressed in their characters’ iconic costumes. The singing and dancing were top-notch, and the actors delivered outstanding performances of all the classic songs. The entire audience was singing along and tapping their feet to the beat of the show. The show was a fun and energetic performance that celebrated the classic musical.

Grease The musical, which was written in 1971, serves as the foundation for this adapted children’s version. The 1978 film adaptation, based on the Broadway stage production, remains a much-celebrated and iconic popular culture hit to this day. The musical is set in 1959, at the fictional Rydell High School, and is based on the 1950s working-class youth subculture known as ‘Greasers’ in America. The plot follows a group of working-class teenagers as they deal with the pressures of peer pressure, politics, personal values, and love. The music score is based on early rock’n’roll concepts and encourages many musical cliches of the era.

The Rehearsals and Challenges

The performing license was originally purchased in January 2019, but due to Covid-19, the production was delayed and had to be extended. As a result, students had to wait a long time to demonstrate their talent.

The Grease Musical Performance opened its audition to students from Year 7 to Year 13, ranging from 11 to 18 years old. After the successful audition process, the cast started their first rehearsal in mid-September. The first rehearsal was for students to spend time bonding and getting to know each other. The students then worked very hard for months, preparing for their performance; from auditions to learning lines and mastering choreography. As rehearsals take time, one of the challenges older pupils faced was to effectively manage practice and work. Also, most students were so used to spending time at home and not having to deal with social situations or even get up and dance, sing and follow choreography.

Despite the nervousness that came with the opportunity, they were all excited to work together and enjoy the experience. After several weeks of rehearsals and rehearsing, the cast was ready to put up a two-hour performance. Finally, after all the hard work, it all seemed to come together naturally and the night of the performance was a success, with everyone feeling the satisfaction of a job well done.

The performance was a fantastic rendition of the movie and musical, with the cast bringing the characters to life in a lively and entertaining way. The student’s parents were delighted that their child put in so much effort in such a short period of time, resulting in a fantastic performance. One of the parents even stated that it was his favourite Grease production he had ever seen. The event was a great success, with students and teachers alike enjoying the performance of the musical and the atmosphere of the reception. Other musical events performed at Brighton College Bangkok were Beauty and the Beast, Elf Jr and Pirates vs Mermaid musical. These plays were spectacular events for all to enjoy.
