Planned projects for Karon wastewater treatment
Karon Municipality is planning to construct a sediment trap system or wasteland to prevent black and wastewater flowing into the sea.
Today (May 2), officials were inspecting the area. No more black water was found. The Bangla Canal which is about 800 metres long has water flowing into it from the Karon community. Tourists were enjoying the beach as normal.
Mayor Tawee says, “We are planning to construct a sediment trap system or wasteland where the sediment can be stored. It is expected to start soon as the municipality already has a budget allocated. The system won’t cost more than 2 million Baht.
“We didn’t find any wastewater releasing into the Karon wastewater treatment system,” Mayor Tawee noted.
“We are planning to expand wastewater treatment in Soi Patak 24 from 6,000 cubic metre to 10,000 cubic metre. We already have 54 million Baht budget but we still can’t find a contractor,” he added.
“We also have a plan to construct a second phase wastewater treatment system. This phase will be able to handle 10,000 cubic metres per day. A budget has been requested from the Office of Environmental Fund for 275 million Bhat. If this new system can be built, it can be used to manage wastewater in Karon for more than 20 years,” he explained.
Dr Wipa Dammee from the Prince of Songkhla University Faculty of Technology and Environment says, “We are focusing on wastewater in Phuket’s tourism destination. We have to use an aeration system to increase oxygen to encourage soil decomposition. We can prevent the black colour and foul stench. We are also suggesting this method to Patong Municipality.”
