Poll: Who are the real victims of corruption in Phuket?

PHUKET: The recent allegation that at least 60 million baht in corruption payments was fleeced each and every month from businesses and individuals in Patong finally put a figure on just a part of the corruption rampant in Phuket (story here).

Every person who has been forced to face the ugly reality of corruption knows what it feels like to be a victim: powerless, abused, cheated.

But in our latest online readers’ poll, the Phuket Gazette asks one and all to look beyond their own experiences and appraise the impact corruption has on a much larger scale.

In this, we ask, “Who do you believe suffers* the most from corruption on Phuket?”

* By use of the word “suffer”, defined as “to experience or be subjected to something bad or unpleasant”, the Gazette here means the long-term negative impact corruption would have on each of the groups listed in the responses available, including the Royal Thai Police and government officials.
