Poll: Who are the real victims of corruption in Phuket? | Thaiger

PHUKET: The recent allegation that at least 60 million baht in corruption payments was fleeced each and every month from businesses and individuals in Patong finally put a figure on just a part of the corruption rampant in Phuket (story here).

Every person who has been forced to face the ugly reality of corruption knows what it feels like to be a victim: powerless, abused, cheated.

But in our latest online readers’ poll, the Phuket Gazette asks one and all to look beyond their own experiences and appraise the impact corruption has on a much larger scale.

In this, we ask, “Who do you believe suffers* the most from corruption on Phuket?”

Options available in the poll are:

1) Expats

2) Tourists

3) Thais

4) Police

5) Government officers

6) Migrant workers

Feel free to name your “most suffering victim” of corruption in the comments below if you feel none of the above are appropriate.

To view the results of our previous poll, which tested the waters of Phuket’s preferred cola brands by asking, “Which cola do you think tastes best?”, click here.

* By use of the word “suffer”, defined as “to experience or be subjected to something bad or unpleasant”, the Gazette here means the long-term negative impact corruption would have on each of the groups listed in the responses available, including the Royal Thai Police and government officials.
