Phuket girl wins Quiksilver Thailand Surf Competition 2010
PHUKET: Indonesian Tipi “The Tiger” Jabrik took first place in the finals of the Men’s shortboard competition at the Quiksilver Thailand Surf Competition 2010 yesterday, while 12-year-old Phuket local Annissa Flynn used her knowledge of the “home surf” to take top honors in the women’s shortboard event.
Seventy-seven surfers from 10 countries competed in the events, with total cash prizes of over 240,000 baht.
Mr Jabrik walked off with the single largest purse, 50,000 baht, while 11-year-old Annissa was awarded 30,000 baht.
Mr Jabrik donated his winnings to Surfing Thailand to help them promote the sport in the country.
Kompol Pattanatalod, who won the open longboard event, was also awarded 30,000 baht.
The first to fourth-place finishers in each division won cash, trophies and prize packs from Quiksilver and other sponsors.
Final Results:
Men shortboard: 1. Tipi Jabrik (IND); 2. Jakapan Tongnak (THA); 3. Michael Antony (AU); Chatchai Samporn.
Women shortboard : 1. Annissa Flynn (THA); 2. Noosara Boonjarean (THA); 3. Sumang Pheongkong (THA); 4. Luisa Scarpa (THA).
Open longboard: 1. Kompol Pattanatalod (THA); 2. Chen Lin Niu (TWN); Preecha Takira (THA), Verravat Kuru (THA).
Phuket Vice Governor Nivit Aroonrat was delighted to see the competition return to Phuket for the second successive year.
The event had the backing of the Tourism Authority of Thailand and was opened by Karon Municipality Mayor Tawee Thongcham.
After the event, participants took part in a number of fun events including the awards ceremony, a night beach party and fashion show. The entertainment ended with a live concert by “T-Bone”.
