Phuket F1 fans await Bahrain bid today
PHUKET: Formula One fans in Phuket eagerly await a decision on whether the Bahrain Grand Prix, originally scheduled for March 13, will be re-scheduled to November 20 later this year.
F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone may move the season’s last race in Brazil back to October 2 which could result in the Indian GP being cancelled.
Bahrain was due to host the prestigious first race of the 2011 GP, but a state of emergency in place since March to put down pro-democracy demonstrations, has now been lifted to entice reinstatement of the F1 race.
GP organizers in the Gulf kingdom hope this effort will be enough, but reports from Bahrain indicate police are continuing their marshalling of large crowds.
Former driving champion Damon Hill is reported as saying that this is an opportunity for F1 to show it cares about human rights.
Currently in third place in this years driver’s championship, Mark Webber of Red Bull said he “hopes that the right decision is made.”
The World Motor Sport Council meet today in Barcelona and will issue its final ruling on Bahrain’s bid to stage this year’s race.
