FIVB beach volleyball is looking good

PHUKET: The venue at Karon beach which is hosting the US$146,400 Phuket Thailand Open powered by PTT beach volleyball tournament, the penultimate stop on the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour is ready for start of play tomorrow.

The courts have been laid down and the center court grandstand is in place, along with the temporary offices for the various officials.

The six day event starts on tomorrow (October 29) with the qualification rounds, followed by the main draw running from Wednesday, October 30 through till Sunday, November 3.

Many of the teams participating in the Phuket tournament were competing last week in the Xiamen Grand Slam in China, such as the Brazilians,Germans, Italians and USA teams who are amongst those expected to dominate the event here on Karon beach.

There has been plenty of interest from local sports fans who will have the opportunity to watch free of charge over 50 of the world’s top women’s beach volleyball teams vying for the gold medal position on the podium.

This year there are a number of new countries debuting including Argentina, Columbia, Hong Kong, Lithuania, Poland and Venezuela,

The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour attracts huge international interest with worldwide TV coverage to over seven hundred million (700,000,000) households. In Thailand, SMM TV will be covering the matches on weekdays with NBT,and T-Sports joining them to cover the semi-finals and finals of the tournament on Saturday October 27 and Sunday, October 28 from 4pm-6pm on both days.

Whilst the professional teams will be the center of attention there is also a supporting event, the PTT Schools Cup which features school teams from the province competing for top honors and a place on the podium alongside the professional teams. Entertainment off court for spectators is provided in the sponsor zone, where numerous booths,including a beer garden, will be selling goods at special prices and organizing games and activities for fans.
