Tiger dies near Dong Yai Forest after alarming villagers

A tiger identified as M116 has died after causing alarm among locals near a concrete dam close to Dong Yai Forest in Lam Nang Rong, Non Din Daeng, Buriram province. Officials discovered the tiger in a weakened state before it passed away, and investigations are underway to determine the cause of death.

Villagers recently spotted a large tiger in the vicinity of the concrete dam in Lam Nang Rong, Non Din Daeng, Buriram province, adjacent to the Dong Yai National Forest Reserve. The sighting caused panic among the local community, particularly after the tiger attacked and injured a tethered cow.

This incident occurred two days ago, prompting wildlife sanctuary officials to put up warning signs, declaring the area dangerous and restricting entry.

After examining the tiger’s stripes and comparing them with a photographic database of tigers in the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex, officials identified the tiger as PDT-116M, commonly known as M116. The male tiger was known to inhabit the border areas of Pang Sida, Thap Lan, Dong Yai, and Ta Phraya.

Somphong “Yak” Sukhopan, a local drone operator, collaborated with officials to track the tiger. During a low-altitude drone flight, they located M116 and coordinated with veterinarian Dr Punch to plan a rescue operation.

Unfortunately, when officials reached the tiger, M116 was found lying weak, severely emaciated, and struggling to breathe. The tiger died shortly after being discovered, reported KhaoSod.

Preliminary examinations revealed no external injuries on M116’s body. To ascertain the cause of death, a thorough necropsy will be conducted by veterinarians. Determining the tiger’s age, which typically ranges between 15 and 25 years, will be part of the investigation.
