Thailand braces for cold snap and coastal thunderstorms
Thailand is experiencing a noticeable drop in temperature, with the northern regions facing chilly to cold weather as temperatures plummet by four degrees Celsius (°C). The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) issued warnings for strong winds, thunderstorms and high seas in the south.
The TMD’s forecast for the next 24 hours indicates that a high-pressure system or cold air mass currently affecting upper Thailand is weakening. This situation is leading to light morning fog in the northern, northeastern, and central regions. However, these areas will continue to experience cold weather during the morning, especially in mountainous regions.
The northeastern monsoon covering the Gulf of Thailand and the southern region is weakening, resulting in reduced rainfall in the lower southern region. However, isolated thunderstorms are still possible. The lower Gulf of Thailand is experiencing moderate conditions, with wave heights measuring 1 to 2 metres.
From tomorrow, December 8 onwards, a new moderate high-pressure system from China will spread over upper Thailand and the South China Sea for two days. This development will lead to a further drop in temperatures and strong winds. Dust and haze levels are expected to increase slightly to moderately in upper Thailand due to improved air circulation.
In the northern region, expect cold weather with morning fog and isolated light rain. Minimum temperatures range from 18 to 22°C, with maximum temperatures between 31 and 35°C. Mountainous areas will experience chilly to cold weather, with minimum temperatures ranging from 10 to 16°C. Winds will blow from the south at speeds of 5 to 15 kilometres per hour (km/h).
The northeastern region will see cool weather with light morning fog. Minimum temperatures will range from 18 to 21°C, with maximum temperatures from 32 to 34°C. Mountain peaks will be cold, with minimum temperatures between 11 to 17°C. Winds will come from the northeast at speeds of 10 to 20 km/h.

The sea will have waves approximately 1 metre high, and in stormy areas, waves will reach 1 to 2 metres.
The western coast of the southern region will have thunderstorms in 40% of the area, especially in Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, and Krabi. Minimum temperatures will range from 23 to 26°C, with maximum temperatures from 31 to 33°C. Winds will blow from the east at speeds of 15 to 30 km/h.
