Thailand and China forge stronger ties ahead of anniversary

In a high-profile meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maris Sangiampongsa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, representing the Thai prime minister, engaged in crucial talks with Shohrat Zakir, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China.

The discussions focused on reinforcing the robust relationship between Thailand and China as the two nations approach the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2025. Both sides emphasised the importance of bolstering ties across all levels, particularly between their legislative bodies and citizens, said Maris.

“We are committed to building a Thailand-China community with a shared future. Our aim is to enhance stability, prosperity, and sustainability.”

The dialogue also centred on aligning national development strategies and boosting collaboration under Thailand’s ambitious Ignite Thailand Vision 2030. Key areas of focus include deepening tourism cooperation, advancing smart farming initiatives, and attracting Chinese investment in future industries, notably clean and renewable energy, reported Pattaya Mail.

Shohrat Zakir, who was on an official visit to Thailand from May 28 to 30 as a guest of the National Assembly of Thailand, expressed optimism about the future.

“Our partnership is set to reach new heights as we celebrate this milestone and work towards mutual growth.”

In related news, Thailand’s Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation unveiled a pioneering research programme in collaboration with China’s leading genome research powerhouse, BGI. This initiative, aimed at transforming healthcare in Thailand, promises to elevate the quality of life for locals while slashing healthcare costs tied to late-stage diseases.

In other news, Thailand set its sights on joining the intergovernmental organisation BRICS, which is expanding beyond its original membership of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

The Thai Cabinet approved a draft of the official letter indicating Thailand’s intention to join the group, according to government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke. Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates became official members of BRICS on January 1. Thailand is among the next 15 countries under consideration for admission.
