Thailand allocates 145.63 million baht for transgender hormone therapy
The Public Health Ministry has allocated 145.63 million baht to the National Health Security Office to supply hormone medication to 200,000 transgender citizens.
According to Deputy Government Spokesperson Anukool Pruksanusak, the ministry’s support aligns with the government’s marriage equality policy, focusing on both physical and mental health for sexually diverse people. He noted the increasing acceptance of various gender identities and the necessity for hormone therapy among transgender people to match their physical appearance with their gender identity.
In the 2025 budget planning, the National Health Security Board has sanctioned 145.63 million baht (US$4.32 million) for health services, including hormone therapy, benefiting around 200,000 transgender citizens. Anukool highlighted that this initiative would help bridge health disparities.
Previously, the cost of hormone therapy fell on people, restricting access for some and posing health risks if hormones were purchased and used without medical oversight, reported Bangkok Post.
He further mentioned that beyond hormone therapy, the National Health Security Office also ensures medical and public health services for these citizens, comparable to those for the general population. These services encompass medical treatment, health promotion, disease prevention, and rehabilitation, promoting equal access to care for all.
