Thai students rank highest for social awareness, weak on view of different cultures
A global survey carried out the by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development reveals that Thai students are highly attuned to social issues compared to students of other countries. However, they fare less well when it comes to respecting and viewing foreign cultures as equal.
Nation Thailand reports that the OECD findings are based on a 2018 survey of 15 year olds around the world. The students’ views on social issues and matters of the environment and human rights were all looked at. According to education economist, Pumsaran Tongliemnak, the findings back up the fact that Thailand’s students have a high level of political awareness, as can be seen in the current activism taking place around the country.
The report also shows that while Thai students fared well when it comes to awareness of social issues, girls are more interested in these matters than boys. The findings also show that students from wealthier backgrounds take more of an interest in the issues than those who come from more deprived families.
Thai students also came out on top for following news events on social media platforms, including Facebook and Twitter. They came in third for concerns over environmental issues and energy conservation.
Pumsarans says adults should take the time to read the report’s findings, in order to better understand Thailand’s younger generation.
