A young Thai man has been arrested for stealing 10,000 baht from his disabled mother, money she had just received from the government, to buy and sell methamphetamine (meth). Initially, he used the drug for personal consumption but decided to expand into selling when he came into possession of a larger sum of money.

Somjai Phutthasena, the district chief of Khao Chakan in Sa Kaeo province, directed an investigation and related agencies to monitor the spread of meth in the area. During a patrol, officers arrived at Soi Khao Mae Laem, Moo 15, Phra Phloeng subdistrict, Khao Chakan district. They found 29 year old Pakorn sitting on a motorcycle by the roadside. Upon spotting the officers, Pakorn attempted to flee but was apprehended shortly after.

Upon searching Pakorn, police discovered 49 methamphetamine tablets hidden in a plastic bag under his foot. Pakorn confessed that he had just sold the drug at a rate of three tablets for 100 baht but had not yet collected the money. He admitted that he had stolen his mother’s ATM card to withdraw the 10,000 baht she had received from the government. He used the entire amount to purchase meth, hoping to turn a profit by selling it.

“I had only been using methamphetamine before but this time I decided to sell it because I saw an opportunity to make more money.”

Before his arrest, Pakorn’s mother, who is disabled, had just received the government aid. Seizing the opportunity, Pakorn took her ATM card and withdrew all the money. He planned to use the 10,000 baht to buy meth and sell it for a profit. However, his plans were cut short by the quick action of the local police.

The discovery of Pakorn’s activities has raised concerns among local officials about the increasing spread of meth in the area. District Chief Somjai has urged local law enforcement to intensify their efforts in curbing the drug problem and to conduct more frequent patrols, reported KhaoSod.
