Drunk driver leaves Phetchabun woman bedridden and bankrupt
Family struggles to cope as medical bills mount and support options run dry

A 40 year old woman in Phetchabun has been bedridden for four months following a car accident caused by a drunk driver, with no progress in her legal case. She has exhausted her savings on medical expenses and now faces financial hardships.
The incident occurred on January 18 in Bueng Sam Phan district, Phetchabun province, when 40 year old Namphueng Jetsorn was struck by a car driven by 46 year old Chakrit from Sap Samo Thot district. Chakrit’s vehicle collided with Namphueng’s motorcycle while she was returning from buying groceries. Witnesses reported that Chakrit was inebriated at the time of the accident.
Since the accident, Namphueng has not received any compensation and has spent over 100,000 baht (US$3,050) on medical care. Bueng Sam Phan police attempted to mediate, with Chakrit agreeing to pay 70,000 baht (US$2,135), but Namphueng has yet to receive any funds.
Chakrit reportedly told his colleagues that Namphueng should pursue legal action if she wants compensation, a step she cannot afford due to financial constraints.
Namphueng recounted the accident, explaining that Chakrit’s car emerged suddenly from his workplace, hitting a median barrier before crashing into her motorcycle. Fortunately, she narrowly avoided further injury as the vehicle did not roll over her.
She suffered severe injuries, including a broken left arm and leg, and complications such as a blocked cerebral artery, making surgery difficult. Her recovery remains uncertain.
Initially, Chakrit visited Namphueng in the hospital, but he ceased contact after discussions about compensation. Namphueng expressed her disappointment, hoping for a reasonable settlement rather than dismissive comments about her injuries.
Namphueng’s father, 62 year old Srinil Klaisuban, expressed his distress over his daughter’s plight. Once the family’s main provider, she is now bedridden, and her family is struggling financially.
They cannot afford medical visits, and their electricity has been disconnected due to unpaid bills, forcing them to rely on a neighbour’s electricity, reported KhaoSod.
Srinil added that the family’s car is at risk of repossession, and their funds are depleted from medical costs. The lack of progress in the legal case, coupled with the financial strain, has left the family in a dire situation. Srinil appealed for Chakrit to take responsibility, as the family’s agricultural work has also ceased due to financial constraints.
