Lifeless body of Indian man found after Koh Samui waterfall stumble
Thai officials discovered the body of a 29 year old Indian man yesterday after he accidentally fell from the cliff at Na Mueang 2 Waterfall on Koh Samui, an island in the southern province of Surat Thani.
Over 30 officials from Koh Samui Police Station, rescue teams, the local administrative office, and the Royal Forest Department participated in the search operation for the missing man, identified as Rsreemany Debjit. According to his friend, Debjit fell from the cliff on Sunday, November 10.
The friend recounted that they visited the waterfall together but only Debjit climbed the cliff to capture a high-angle view. Despite warnings from both his friend and a cautionary sign at the site, Debjit ignored the advice and proceeded.
A Thai tourist also reportedly cautioned them not to ascend the cliff, but this warning, too, was disregarded.
Debjit is said to have slipped and fallen down the cliff into the water before disappearing. Only one side of his white sandals was found at the scene.
Unfortunately, officials had to pause the search due to strong currents flowing from the mountain after days of heavy rainfall.
The search operation resumed the following day, and Debjit’s body was ultimately found in the lower section of the waterfall basin, trapped between a tree and a rock. He was shirtless and wearing only black shorts.
Several accidents, including fatal ones, were reported at waterfalls on the island. In 2019, a Spanish man fell to his death at Na Mueang 2 Waterfall due to slippery surfaces along the trekking route.
This year, 2024, a British man and an Italian man were injured in separate accidents at waterfalls on Koh Samui. The Italian man’s incident took place at Na Mueang 2 Waterfall, while the British man was injured at Hin Lad Waterfall.
Koh Samui and other areas in southern Thailand experience two main seasons: the dry or hot season and the rainy season. On the eastern coast, facing the Gulf of Thailand, the summer season spans from May to September. On the western coast, facing the Andaman Sea, summer is from November to April.
As Koh Samui is now in the rainy season, tourists are advised to exercise caution due to strong waves, high winds, and slippery surfaces at waterfalls.
