A 20 year old drunk driver crashed his Mercedes-Benz into a motorcycle taxi driver on the Rama 9 Road in Bangkok. The driver was caught on camera fleeing the scene of the accident with the victim still clinging to the car bonnet.

On Tuesday, a Thai TikToker posted a video of an incident at the Rama 9 intersection which occurred on April 16. The video shows several orange-jacketed motorbike taxi drivers – or “win” drivers – surrounding the car. One win driver, the victim, lay on the car bonnet in an effort to stop the assailant from fleeing, reports CH8.

Despite the win driver’s efforts, the driver darted away from the scene at a high speed moments later – with the victim still clinging to the Mercedes’ bonnet.

The video went viral on TikTok with netizens expressing concern for the victim and wondering what happened after the clip ended.

Yesterday, officers from the Makkasan Police Station reported that the driver was a 20 year old man who was under the influence of alcohol. He had been drinking at an entertainment venue called Royal City Avenue (RCA) before the accident occurred.

Police say that the drunk driver hit the victim before fleeing the scene, but the group of win drivers quickly followed and managed to stop the car at the Rama 9 intersection, which is when the victim lay on the bonnet, as seen in the clip.

However, the hit-and-run driver didn’t get very far as his tire blew in front of Rama 9 Soi 15, about three kilometres away from the scene of the accident, where he was arrested by the police.

The Mercedes-Benz driver admitted to the police that he was drunk, but claimed that did not realise that he crashed into the win driver. Then, he claimed he didn’t know that the win driver was on his bonnet as he sped off. He said he was frightened because the win drivers surrounded his car, so he decided to make a break for it.

The victim requested compensation of 100,000 baht because he was injured in the accident. The Mercedes-Benz driver negotiated a settlement of 50,000 baht and has already paid 20,000 baht to the victim. He promised to pay the remaining 30,000 baht today, reports CH8.

Officers at Makkasan Police Station charged the driver with driving under the influence of alcohol, which caused injury to the victim and damage to another person’s assets. The penalty for this offence is imprisonment for two to six years, a fine of 40,000 to 100,000 baht, and the suspension or revocation of the driver’s license.
