A drug-addicted Thai man beheaded his mother and abandoned her head in a rice field in Amnat Charoen province yesterday, January 4, before being arrested shortly afterwards.

The brutal incident occurred at around 8.30am in Ban Non Sung community, Na Wiang sub-district, Senangkhanikhom district. Police identified the suspect as 42 year old Thai man Mongkhon, while the victim was his 71 year old mother Soi.

A 57 year old Thai woman, whose name was withheld, told the Hone Krasae news programme that she encountered Mongkhon sitting by the roadside with his face covered in blood. She said she initially believed he had been assaulted and approached him to ask about his condition.

However, during their interaction, Mongkhon reportedly stared at her aggressively, causing her to fear for her safety. She was concerned because Mongkhon was known to have a history of drug use and had recently returned from a rehabilitation programme.

The woman then alerted the community leader, who went to Mongkhon’s house to investigate. Upon entering the home, the village headman discovered Soi’s headless body inside the house.

Police were immediately called to the scene, and the village broadcast system was used to warn residents to remain alert. Further searches later led officers to discover Soi’s severed head in a rice field near her home.

Police arrested Mongkhon shortly afterwards and charged him with intentional murder. Officers said the suspect would also undergo drug testing.

Forensic officers collected blood samples and DNA from Mongkhon for detailed examination, while investigators continue gathering evidence to support legal proceedings.

Similar violent cases were reported in Thailand in 2024. In one incident in Songkhla province, a 56 year old Thai man was found dead in his home with his head placed near his body. His son was later arrested for questioning, with locals suspecting mental illness as a possible factor, although police have yet to officially confirm the motive.

Another case occurred the same year in Surat Thani, where a Thai man beheaded his mother and allegedly ate part of her brain. Authorities later found the suspect had a mental illness and had never received medical treatment.
