Campaign to get international training for Thai teen declared record sprinter
One young Thai athlete is giving the kingdom a new reason to be proud. World Athletics has declared a Thai teenager the fastest 100 metre sprinter in the world at under 18 years old. The 16 year old boy, Puripol Boonson, recorded 10.09 seconds in a 100 metre sprint, and 20.19 seconds in a 200 metre sprint, at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Colombia on August 2.
However, his time of 10.12s in the final still wasn’t enough for him to claim a medal at the championships.
Now, an online campaigner is fundraising to help Puripol have more opportunities. Fundraisers have launched a page on Change.org asking Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt to financially support Puripol, so he can receive world class training overseas. This would put him side by side with other top athletes from across the globe.
The campaigner claims that training abroad will benefit Puripol more than hiring a foreign coach to train him in Thailand.
Before Puripol set the new 100 metre sprint record, the fastest U18 record had belonged to US sprinter Anthony Schwartz at 10.15 seconds. Even though Puripol only joined the SEA Games for the first time in Hanoi in May, he ended up winning three golds there.
Outside of U18 records, the fastest 100 metre sprint in the world recently was Botswanan runner Letsile Tebogo’s record of 9.91 seconds. The 19 year old won the gold in Columbia. Back in 2009, retired runner Usain Bolt had set the fastest 100 metre sprint time in the world ever of 9.58 seconds.
