‘Shark in bag’ wasn’t found at Maya Bay

In reaction to the story circulating about the ‘dead blacktip reef shark found dead in a sack’, a Phi Phi diver has contacted us with the following information….

I posted the original photo of the shark in a rice sack that was found by one of my instructors on Sunday, November 4.

Your story incorrectly states that the shark was found at Maya Bay, it was not, it was found at a dive site called Malong which is on the west coast of Phi Phi Ley.

None of the dive centres on Phi Phi dive in Maya Bay since it is closed to such activities. The national park is doing a great job in protecting this area.

I have attached additional photos of the shark when it was recovered to the dive boat to confirm my statement.

Thanks Eddy for contacting The Thaiger.
