Fire Walk at Jui Tui Shrine in Phuket Town

One of the most astonishing rituals of the annual Vegetarian Festival is ‘Goi Hoi’, or fire walk. The event was arranged last night at the Jui Tui Tao Bo Keng Shrine in Phuket Town. About a hundred Masong gathered to participate in the event.

At the ritual ground about 2,000 locals in white costume attending the vegetarian festival, as well as media, gathered to watch the fire walk. The ritual was chaired by Phuket Mayor, Somjai Suwansuppana.

After the Masong walked through the fire, there were also three ‘Chai Iew’, the name given to people who strictly respect the precepts of the vegetarian festival, who were selected by the Masongs to walk on the fire. Although there was first aid available, all appeared safe and well following the event.
