Police chase and escape of Bangkok taxi rider end in injury of passenger

Dashcam clip ignites debate on accountability, police or rider at fault?

A traffic police officer chased an app-based motorcycle taxi rider who ran a red light, causing the female passenger to fall and suffer a head injury. The incident sparked mixed reactions online.

The Facebook page, อยากดังเดี๋ยวจัดให้ รีเทริน์ part 6, posted dashcam footage of the incident yesterday, June 12, stating the administrator’s opinions in the caption…

“Both parties were at fault. The officer was performing his duty but acted inappropriately, while the rider should have stopped but chose to flee.”

According to the page, the officer from Pathum Wan Police Station pursued the Grab rider near the MBK shopping mall in Bangkok. During the chase, the rider lost control and hit a traffic island, causing the passenger to fall. She reportedly suffered a head injury requiring urgent treatment.

The footage showed the officer grabbing the rider while running beside the moving motorcycle. Both the officer and the passengers fell during the scuffle. The officer quickly got up, gathered his belongings, and checked on the injured woman.

Public opinion was divided. Supporters of the officer said he was upholding the law and blamed the rider for the incident. Critics argued the officer should have prioritised public safety and pursued legal action later using CCTV evidence. Others agreed with the page’s administrator that both sides were responsible.

The page later clarified that the Grab rider was stopped for running a red light and failing to provide a helmet for the passenger. He was also not carrying his driving licence and attempted to flee, which violated Section 368 of the Criminal Law. As a result, the rider was fined 1,500 baht.

Channel 7 reported that the rider and passenger later filed a counter-complaint, accusing the officer of using excessive force. The woman sustained bruises, a head injury, and shoulder scratches, while the rider had a knee injury.

The passenger’s older brother told the media that the rider stayed with his sister at the hospital and offered to cover medical costs. He said the officer later apologised, and a senior police official contacted the family, promising a fair investigation.
