Songkran 2025 boosts Thai tourism revenue by 26.5 billion baht

Thailand’s tourism and sports minister, Suwong Thienthong, announced that the Songkran festival in 2025 generated an estimated revenue of 26.5 billion baht, marking an 8% increase from the previous year.

The festival attracted approximately 470,000 foreign tourists, a 6.5% rise from last year, with visitors hailing from Malaysia, China, India, Russia, Taiwan, Europe, and South Korea.

Social media buzz surrounding Songkran reached over 219,000 mentions, with engagement surpassing 106 million interactions. Khon Kaen province garnered the most attention.

In Bangkok, 550,000 attendees gathered at Sanam Luang from April 11 to April 13, generating 1.7 billion baht (US$51 million). Silom Road and Khao San Road witnessed 165,239 and 197,314 participants respectively, on April 12 and April 13.

Chiang Mai hosted the Pa Wenee Pi Mai Mueang under the theme Maha Muan Maha Man, featuring appearances by Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra and her father, former Prime Minister Thaksin. The event attracted around 132,231 people, a 36.56% increase from the previous year, with 88.53% being Thai tourists and 11.47% international visitors.

Khon Kaen’s Sad Thueng Kaen event on Khao Niew Road saw over 50,000 attendees on the first day, generating approximately 300 million baht (US$9 million) and becoming a trending topic on social media. Nong Khai’s celebrations from April 12 to April 14 drew 42,018 people, including 39,732 Thais and 2,286 foreigners, with a financial turnover of 129 million baht (US$3.87 million).

In Hat Yai, the Hatyai Midnight Songkran 2025 event, which extended water splashing until midnight, attracted 20,000 to 30,000 mainly Malaysian tourists. The event’s economic impact is forecasted to exceed 1,000 million baht, with hotel bookings reaching full capacity.

Sa Kaeo’s Aranyaprathet hosted the ARAN Happiness Splash 2025, blending local culture with modern elements to promote tourism and economic growth. The event welcomed over 12,000 participants.

In eastern Thailand, the celebrations continue in areas like Chon Buri, Bang Saen, Pattaya, and Sattahip, with festivities lasting until the end of the week. The Songkran Phra Pradaeng event in Samut Prakan will conclude the month, reported KhaoSod.
