Since the arrival of Rezum Water Vapor Therapy at M Centre at BNH Hospital Thailand, men suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as enlarged prostate, no longer need to undergo a major operation or take long-term medication.

At the forefront of this innovative procedure is Dr. Suntchai Wirotsaengthong, the hospital’s esteemed urologist, who has been designated as a Rezum Centre of Excellence since 2023. This designation established him as one of the few urologists in Thailand with extensive experience in Rezum Water Vapor Therapy. So, how has Dr. Suntchai’s journey been after a year? And what’s next for him? Let’s find out.

Becoming a “hate-love” doctor

Rezum Water Vapor Therapy is a minimally invasive treatment for BPH. It doesn’t involve any incision or implant and only requires local anesthesia to reduce discomfort. Therefore, it requires little to no downtime. You can go home on the same day and be back at work within a few days after the procedure.

But, of course, while it all sounds so easy, the result takes time. This is how Dr. Suntchai becomes a “hate-love” doctor to his Rezum patients at M Centre, BNH Hospital Thailand.

“Normally, patients hate me first and come back to thank me later,” Dr. Suntchai explained. The initial period post-Rezum can be particularly trying, as inflammation and swelling in the prostate can cause difficulty in urinating for the first 10-14 days. In some cases, symptoms may even worsen before they start to improve. A catheter may be temporarily needed to assist with urination during this period. This is a common part of the recovery process.

Dr. Suntchai and his team always explain all these details to their patients. They talk about the pros and cons of Rezum and make sure each patient knows what to expect. They also tailor the treatment to fit each person’s needs.

“The symptoms will improve gradually in the next month, and mostly my patients will feel the optimal benefits of Rezum about three months after they have the procedure done”, Dr. Suntchai said.

Numerous patients under the care of Dr. Suntchai and his team have reported that the procedure improves their quality of life. For instance, Matthias, a 63-year-old man who dealt with BPH symptoms for more than a year and a half, has seen gradual improvement in his condition. After one year, he expressed satisfaction with the outcome. His urine retention has decreased from 140 ml to 43 ml following Rezum treatment. With this decrease in urine retention, his urination frequency has returned to normal, alleviating the need to visit the bathroom every 30-60 minutes as previously required.

“The success rate of this procedure, from five years of research, was that we found a significant improvement in the flowof about 44%. The symptom score will reduce by about 48%,” explains Dr. Sutchai.

Another important benefit of Rezum is that it can address BPH symptoms without compromising sexual health or causing unwanted side effects commonly associated with other treatment options. According to Dr. Suntchai, the procedure does not lead to retrograde ejaculation, and there have been no reports of sexual dysfunction.

Expanding horizons with Urolift

Dr. Suntchai and his team at M Centre, BNH Hospital are always looking for new ways to help their patients. One year after receiving the Rezum Center of Excellence award, they introduced another treatment called Urolift at the M Centre in BNH Hospital.

Urolift is another minimally invasive treatment for BPH. It works differently from Rezum. Instead of using steam, Urolift involves placing tiny implants in the prostate. These implants lift and hold the enlarged prostate tissue out of the way. Therefore, it doesn’t block the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body). This helps to improve urine flow without removing any tissue.

Like Rezum, Urolift is minimally invasive and offers a quick recovery time. It also preserves sexual function, so you don’t have to worry about losing your ability to have erections or ejaculation.
