The government of Laos has agreed to re-open border checkpoints with Thailand imminently, according to Thai government spokesman, Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana. The decision follows a courtesy call between the Lao ambassador to Thailand, Seng Soukhathivong, and PM Prayut Chan-o-cha. During the call, the Thai PM said a plan by Lao PM Phankham Viphavanh to make an official visit to Thailand this year would be a good opportunity to build on a strategic partnership aimed at growth and sustainable development.

According to a Bangkok Post report, both parties have agreed to re-open border checkpoints in order to boost economic recovery and improve cross-border trade. The Lao ambassador also thanked the Thai government for its assistance in providing medical supplies during the Covid-19 pandemic, and for its help during the devastating floods of 2019.

It’s understood the Thai PM also used the call to urge the Lao government to restructure its customs process and amend the fees collected at the Thanaleng Dry Port and Vientiane Logistics Park, opposite the Nong Khai border. This would encourage more investors from Thailand to use the Laos-China railway services. He also asked Laos to consider developing the R12 route that connects the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, pointing out that this would be of benefit to local communities on all sides.
