What’s open and what’s closed during Songkran?
The Songkran Silly Season’ is almost upon us and along with the break comes official public holidays. This year’s Songkran runs, officially, from April 13 – 16 (this Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday). But many will be taking this Thursday off as well as the following Tuesday to make the Thai New Year long weekend even longer.
You should expect the OrBorTor offices and all official municipal offices to be closed this Friday and the following Monday, along with the Immigration offices in Phuket Town and Patong, most banks (except at shopping centres), post offices, and the Department of Transport and Department of Labour offices in Saphan Hin.
Hospitals, even the public hospitals, are all expected to be open, indeed (sadly), it’s the busiest time of the year for them. There are no days restricting alcohol sales although local municipalities are setting up ‘family-friendly’ areas in most tourist zones where alcohol sales and consumption may be restricted. All police and tourist police stations will be open right through Songkran.
The Thaiger will be posting all the latest news right through Songkran. The Thaiger 102.75 FM will have special Songkran programming and keep you up to date with the latest news, weather and major stories.
Be safe and plan your journeys carefully throughout Songkran.
