Police in Phuket have issued a stern warning against begging and busking in key public areas during the Phuket Vegetarian Festival. This comes after several individuals were apprehended at Jui Tui Shrine in Phuket Town on Thursday, October 3.

A team of officers, led by officials from the Phuket Provincial Office of the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS), arrived at the bustling market on Ranong Road in front of the shrine around 7.30pm. The operation saw participation from officials of Phuket City Municipality, the Mueang District Office, and the Phuket City Police.

During the check, three individuals were found performing street acts, while another case involved a woman and her three year old daughter selling candy on the street. Officers from the Children and Family Shelter intervened, explaining the Child Protection Act of 2003 to the mother and issuing a warning to prevent further violations.

Two foreign nationals were also caught performing on the streets for money. Officials from the Protection Centre coordinated with the Phuket Immigration Office to address their situation.

A meeting was scheduled yesterday, October 4 to discuss pursuing legal action against those involved. The MSDHS will continue these checks, working alongside local law enforcement, to enforce regulations and protect vulnerable groups in Phuket.

An official report from the street inspection noted, “Officials from the Protection Center coordinated with the Phuket Immigration Office to address the issue.”

The report further detailed that the authorities remain committed to maintaining order and ensuring the safety of both residents and visitors during the festival. The MSDHS has reiterated its intention to carry out similar checks throughout the event to deter any illegal activities, reported Phuket News.
