Woman “drowns’ in tin mine

KOH KAEW: Police on Tuesday morning recovered the body of Som Taem-ngam, 45, which was floating on an old car tire in a tin mine lagoon to the north of Dulwich International College.

It is believed that she drowned while washing her clothes by the banks of the lake while drunk.

Pol Maj Wacharin Jiratthitikarlwiwat of Phuket City Police Station said that K. Som lived with her husband, Sommit Sompinit, 36, in a rundown wooden shack about 500 meters from the lagoon.

He added that that neighbors had often heard the couple arguing while drunk.

Maj Wacharin said K. Sommit told police that both he and K. Som were drunk on Monday night, and that she went to wash clothes in the lagoon, but fell into the water and drowned.

“He went looking for K. Som and found her body about 8 pm, and placed it on a car tire and left it floating in the lagoon,” Maj Wacharin said.

“He then went to his relatives’ home nearby but he did not report her death to the police because he was scared,” he added.

A neighbor reported the body to police the following morning.

Maj Wacharin said that police believe that K. Som drowned, as an inspection by doctors had revealed no wounds on the body.
