Phuket’s road nightmare gets worse: Italian man dies in crash

PHUKET: The death of an Italian man in a Ducati motorbike accident in Karon before dawn today has brought the number of road fatalities in Phuket to six dead in less than 24 hours.

The man, whose name is being withheld, lost control of his motorbike on a curve in the hills to north of Karon at about 5:30am.

“He was dead when we arrived at the scene,” Lt Weerayuth Thansirisukawarakul told the Phuket Gazette.

“The bike was in a ditch beside the road. The man had suffered severe head trauma in the accident as he was not wearing a helmet.”

The Italian embassy in Bangkok has been notified of the accident, Lt Weerayuth said.

The death of the Italian man came just hours after three teenagers died after a high-speed crash in Thung Thong just before midnight (story here).

The Gazette is withholding the name of the deceased until it is confirmed that relatives or next of kin have been informed.
