Myanmar national is latest ‘Seven Days of Danger’ fatality [video]
PHUKET: Another road fatality was added to the tally on day six of the ‘Seven Days of Danger’ road safety campaign.
Video footage of Myanmar national Than Zaw Htwe crashing his motorbike into a road sign on Thepkrasattri Road yesterday shows him losing control of the bike after swerving out of the way of a pick-up truck.
Mr Than’s death marks the fifth road fatality during this year’s road-safety campaign. The campaign’s zero deaths goal was lost in its first 30 hours. (story here).
Police are now searching for the driver of the pick-up in order to question him about the incident.
In addition to the death of Mr Than, day six of the campaign saw 8 accidents with 7 injuries.
Updated Phuket statistics issued by the DDPM for the number of traffic offences during the six days of the campaign are as follows:
– Riding a motorbike without wearing a helmet – 1,949
– Riding an unsafe motorbike – 19
– Driving under the influence of alcohol – 125
– Driver and/or passenger(s) failing to wear seat belts – 277
– Driving without [carrying] a valid driving licence – 1,104
– Speeding – 121
– Failing to stop at a red light – 74
– Driving on the wrong side of the road (ghost-riding) – 90
– Overtaking in a restricted zone – 6
– Using a mobile phone while driving – 96
In total, 3,861 offences have been recorded among the 13,381 vehicles checked.
