Migrant worker found dead in empty elevator shaft

PHUKET: The body of a migrant worker was found at the bottom of an empty elevator shaft at a construction site in Cherng Talay last night.

Police arrived at the scene, a Castlewood Group construction site on Soi Khok Tanot 12, at about 7pm to find the body of Myanmar national San Hla @ Nai, 34, floating face down in water that had collected at the bottom of the shaft.

“The body was fully clothed and had serious head wounds,” said Cherng Talay Police Superintendent Serm Kwannimit.

“After an initial examination, we believe the man died at least two days ago.”

After questioning workers at the site, police learned that Mr San – who was working as a mechanical engineer – had been missing from work for several days before his body was found, Col Serm explained.

Police believe that Mr San died from an accidental fall, but have not yet ruled out foul play.

“The body has been sent to Thalang Hospital to confirm the cause of death while we continue our investigation,” Col Serm said.
