Labor minister applauds provincial efforts
PHUKET: Minister of Labor Sirichai Distaku urged Phuket’s officials to increase efforts to combat human trafficking, low wage rates and to increase the number of Thais working in skilled labor positions during his visit to the island on Thursday.
Gen Sirichai’s visit comes after a period of escalating tensions between the provincial government and local employers of migrant laborers (story here).
“I’m glad Phuket has made continued progress on the issues of illegal laborers and the management of migrant camps,” Gen Sirichai said. “I also want to congratulate the provincial government’s efforts to decrease the number of illegal tour guides operating on the island.”
“As all we know, Phuket is a world-class tourist destination,” the minister added. “This brings with it a wealth of employment opportunities in sectors such as property and hotels.”
Gen Sirichai said he came to Phuket in order to meet with employers and employees and hear about the problems they face in their work. He also used the visit to extend enforcement of Bangkok’s workforce policies in Phuket and the Andaman region.
“In conclusion, I also see Singapore and Malaysia as good models to focus our efforts on in enhancing the quality of our labor,” he said. “The ministry is currently planning for a diversified workforce that can compete with neighboring nations by 2020.”
