Warning from Pattaya police about bogus charity collectors

Pattaya’s police chief is warning tourists against donating to street charity collectors. He claims many of the so-called charities are bogus and the money is lily going straight into their pockets.

Speaking to Pattaya Mail, Pol. Col. Apichai Kroppech says that both Thais and foreigners are roaming the streets acting as charity collectors, hoping to take advantage of people’s good nature. He recommended that potential donors should check their credentials before giving money or just politely say ‘no’ and walk on by.

He also asked the public to contact police about the panhandlers and charity vendors so their charity-fundraising licenses can be checked.

Last week a group of Filipinos were arrested for raising funds for a alleged children’scharity. They had impressive looking documentation for the charity and raised about 5,000 baht in three hours, but the “charity” didn’t exist.
