Man in Pattaya poses as cop, holds girlfriend hostage
A tense confrontation unfolded yesterday in Pattaya as a man impersonating a police officer took his girlfriend hostage with a fake gun after she attempted to end their relationship. The incident involved an intense standoff with real police officers and concluded without serious injuries.
Police officers, led by Thananon Athiphansri, Chainanrong Jitsunthorn, and Apinan Boonyarat, responded to the scene with over 30 officers, both in uniform and plain clothes. They surrounded a condominium in Central Pattaya, where the suspect held his girlfriend at gunpoint.
The perpetrator, later identified as 35 year old Thepbaramee was reportedly enraged after his girlfriend, Kook (a pseudonym), tried to leave him.
After an hour-long negotiation, Thepbaramee released Kook from the third-floor unit. She emerged with a minor scissor wound on her right thigh, which, fortunately, did not penetrate deeply.
Despite the physical harm being minimal, she remained visibly shaken by the ordeal.
The suspect, however, refused to surrender initially. As pressure mounted, he eventually complied and awaited arrest inside the apartment. Police discovered a fake Glock pistol and the scissors used in the assault, which they confiscated as evidence.
Kook revealed that she had been dating Thepbaramee for about a year, describing a relationship that had recently become tumultuous with frequent arguments. She had decided to end things and had brought a friend along to help collect her belongings.
Upon seeing her, Thepbaramee brandished the weapon, threatening both her and her companion, before forcibly taking her back to his room under the guise of wanting to talk things over. During the confrontation, he used scissors to threaten her, although they did not cause significant harm.
Investigations revealed that Thepbaramee had a history of impersonating police officers. He often purchased police uniforms and polo shirts with official insignias to wear, misleading others into believing he was part of the force. In reality, he worked as a security guard.
The police have taken Kook and her friend, who witnessed the incident, for questioning. They are pursuing charges against Thepbaramee for unlawful detention. Following the initial investigation, he was handed over to investigative officers to face legal proceedings, reported KhaoSod.
